COVID-19 & summer safety: a letter from Public Health Director Grace Franklin

School is out, and summer is right around the corner. But COVID-19 is still around, and it loves to “hitchhike.”

So how does that look for Memorial Day barbeques, camping trips, hiking, biking and basically enjoying your summer while still protecting yourself and your loved ones?

You can and should do all of these activities, just make some modifications for best practices during this pandemic.

Planning a Memorial Day barbeque?

As long as you limit group size to less than ten people, you can still have your barbeque get together. Just remember to maintain physical distancing and wear your face masks. If you are…

Gondola

Gondola opening date delayed; expected to open June 15

In light of COVID-19 concerns, the gondola will not open for the 2020 summer as originally scheduled on May 21, 2020, due to public health orders and a delayed start to required maintenance work.

Gondola officials are anticipating an opening date of June 15, 2020, with new health guidelines, but that is subject to change given the constantly evolving COVID-19 situation.

“As we slowly reopen our towns, our full- and part-time residents and guests will once again be counting on the gondola to get them to our farmer’s markets, shops, restaurants, and even their favorite trailheads,” said Mountain…

Telluride Town Council again discussed the concept of making Colorado Avenue a pedestrian area, as they continue to explore ways to support a local economy reeling from the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing public health orders issued by state and county officials. Tuesday’s regular council meeting marked the second in a series of discussions surrounding a potential Main Street closure.

The discussion was once again led by town projects manager Lance McDonald who framed it in terms of logistics such as parking and deliveries, while addressing the challenges of doing business in a climate of social distancing and limited crowd size. The main concept is for…

(May 12, 2020) -- San Miguel County, CO – Public Health Officials announced plans to continue to align with the State’s orders at a special meeting of the Board of County Commissioners today.

In an amendment to current orders, Public Health officials will allow non-critical businesses to extend their workforce beginning this Friday, May 15th at 12:01am to residents of the Western Slope. Current orders restrict workers to San Miguel County residents only, unless an exception has been granted via the County’s permitting process.

“Our goal is to thoughtfully loosen our restrictions categorically based on what is happening in our county and to mirror the State orders where it makes sense to do so,” Grace Franklin, County Public Health Director said.

Telluride residents are familiar with the devastating effects of wildfires. The fires during the summer of 2018 were disastrous for parts of Colorado. Fortunately, most residential areas were spared. For the current wildfires in Australia, the same is not true.

The continent’s megafires are burning in populated areas, which is atypical. Wildfires of this scale usually burn in remote regions in Canada or Siberia, where they can burn out without threatening people, as…

By the time you read this, the Dakota Home Store, a fixture on Telluride’s Main Street for more than two decades, will be no more.

All gone: the carefully selected tables and chairs, the scrupulously curated kitchen supplies. Goodbye to Joya and Danny, the golden retrievers who lounged inside the warm store in winter and greeted kids outside in summer.

For that matter, farewell to the golden-retriever-shaped salt-and-pepper shakers, one of the few items left in the store Friday afternoon. Tom and Anne Connor, Joya and Danny’s owners — also the owners of…
