Cornerstone Colorado is more than just a place to shoot a few rounds of golf — it’s a lifestyle. Just ask the development’s new general manager, Michael Bratcher.
“It really is a golf community, rather than a golf or country club,” he said. “It’s the finest mountain course in the world; it’s the real deal.”
Cornerstone, a private residence golf club located between Montrose and Telluride, sits on 6,000 acres — half of which are open space — and offers expansive views of the San Juan Mountains.
The development opened in July 2008, and in February of this year owners hired KemperSports, which manages some of the country’s best golf courses, to manage the course. Bratcher joined the Cornerstone team in April, bringing with him almost two decades of experience as a golf pro and manager of clubs and resorts in California.
“I’ve been working for 19 years to find a club like this,” he said.
Bratcher has spent this summer getting to know Cornerstone’s membership to gauge its needs as he shapes his vision for the club’s future.
“I glean my vision off the member’s expectation,” he said. “It’s a casual but elegant world-class golf location.”
Since it is still a developing community with a small membership of fewer than 75 people, he can build relationships with most of the members.
“I’m trying to enhance the programming while running a smart operation,” he said. “…and being responsible to the owners and members.”
Cornerstone is a development of Hunt Realty Investments, Inc., a company focused on real estate investment, development and management across the United States.
Club membership comes with the opportunity to build a home; there are 412 proposed homesites, but only 122 of them are currently platted. Membership is priced at $60,000 with the additional purchase of property.
“It’s really great investment,” Bratcher said.
Telluride’s Stephen Cieciuch is the property’s listing broker through Telluride Properties.
“[Cornerstone] is a fantastic combination of open space with rolling hillsides and majestic aspen groves,” Cieciuch said.
The developers are currently offering 10 lots at discounted prices ranging from $165,000 for .3 acres to $375,000 for 20 acres — which for the first time include the cost of membership.
“It’s a really aggressive price reduction to stimulate activity,” Cieciuch said.
The golf course isn’t just any 18-hole set up, either. The legendary Greg Norman — whom Bratcher calls one of his personal heroes — designed it. Norman is a professional golfer from Australia and was one the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer in the 80s and 90s.
“Greg really captured some of the greatest features of the property,” Bratcher said. “There’s not a single hole that borders another hole. It just goes on, and on.”
The course has received national notice. Golf Travel + Leisure Magazine named it one of the top 25 best golf course communities in 2009. Golf Magazine named it a best new private course in 2008, GolfWeek named it the No. 1 best new course in 2008 and Links called it one of the best new courses of 2008.
Cornerstone offers members more than just golf. Bratcher has helped improve the equestrian and fly-fishing programs, and there are more than 20 miles of hiking, biking and riding trails.
As Bratcher settles into Cornerstone, and his new home in Mountain Village, he is already looking to the future. His short-term goals include growing membership and breaking ground on a new clubhouse once more members are brought in.
“My entire method of finding new members is friends of members,” he said. “That’s how we’ll keep growing.”
And for a kid who grew up golfing, Bratcher is right at home with Cornerstone and Telluride.
“It’s a fantasy job for me,” he said. “I’ll never leave of my own choice.”
